The Canadian Government denied today reports that it was selling 20 Sabre jets to Israel. A spokesman for the External Affairs Department said that the Cabinet has reached “no decision” on the granting of an export permit for jet fighter aircraft for Israel.
An Israel application for 20 jets has been before the Cabinet for some weeks, but it was indicated today that although the Canadian Government looks favorably upon the application, no formal action will betaken until United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold has completed a round of conferences in New York in connection with his recent talks with the Governments of Israel and the Arab countries.
(In the past two days, Mr. Hammarskjold has met with: Dr. Joza Brilej, of Yugoslavia, and this month’s Security Council president; Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., American delegate to the UN; Sir Pierson Dixon, British delegate; Herve Alphand, French delegate; Arkady A. Sobolev, Soviet delegate; Dr. Djalal Abdoh; Iranian delegate; and U. Win, Burmese delegate and chairman of the Asian-African conference.)
