Mitchell Sharp, the Canadian Secretary of State for External Affairs, says he would be “more optimistic” about the possibility of Middle East peace if a new United Nations Emergency Force had been requested by Israel and Egypt to lie as a buffer between them. Mr. Sharp met reporters here on his return from an eight-day tour which took him to Teheran, Israel and Cairo. He called the present situation “dangerous” and termed it “confrontation without concession from any party.”
He said that he had brought no peace proposals to his talks with Premier Golda Meir or President Abdel Nasser. He said that a cooling down in the tone of speeches–an apparent reference to Col. Nasser–would help improve the political climate in the area. He did not see any outbreak of an all-out war as imminent.
