Confidence that the Ecumenical Council being held now at the Vatican will adopt a document renouncing “the negative and antagonistic attitude” held toward Jews by some Christians was expressed in a letter received here today by Rabbi D. Kirshenbaum from the Rev.G, Emmett Carter”, Bishop of London.
Bishop Carter, who is attending the Ecumenical Council, wrote to Rabbi Kirshenbaum: “I am very confident here in Rome. When I return to the diocese, I shall call the attention of my people to what has transpired and will transpire here.”
“We must, once and for all, ” continued the Bishop, “renounce the negative and antagonistic attitude which has characterized so many Christians toward the Jewish people in the past, and adopt the only attitude worthy of ourselves and of our religion–a religion which sprang from the very heart of Judaism–in the recognition of God as the Father of all of us and in the love of our Jewish brethren.”
