Preparations by the Canadian Jewish Congress for a $250,000 relief drive passed the preliminary stages this week as other money-raising agencies gave approval to the campaign and offered cooperation. The Joint Distribution Committee, it has been reported, has placed its local committees at the disposal of the Jewish Congress.
It was announced that the allocation of the sums raised will be as follows: 45 per cent for the Jewish Agency; 35 per cent for the Joint Distribution Committee; 10 per cent for HICEM; and 10 per cent for ORT.
Further progress in the campaign, which will be inaugurated in early Autumn, is being made by H. M. Caiserman, general secretary, who is on a transcontinental tour to organize the various Jewish communities in the dominion.
ANTI-DEFAMATION WORK
Meanwhile, the anti-defamation work of the Congress continues unabated. In a report, issued by Mr. Caiserman, on the activities of the Anti-Defamation Committees, he stated in part:
“Our work under this heading embraces various activities of vital importance. We interviewed the authorities to stop the infiltration of Nazi propaganda into Canada. In Winnipeg a considerable quantity of Nazi literature was confiscated. And our president made an interpellation in Parliament concerning the dissemination of Nazi propaganda by the German consul, as a result of which a promise has been received from him to discontinue the practice of same.”
This anti-defamation work of the Jewish Congress is being carried on by the three central committees in Montreal, Toronto, and Winnipeg, representing the Eastern, Central, and Western divisions respectfully. Altogether there are sixty-three anti-defamation bureaus in local districts.

The Anti-Defamation Committee in Toronto is called the “Committee on Public Relations” and is constituted as follows: Rabbi M. N. Eisendrath, chairman; S. Factor, M.P.; S. M. Shapiro; L. Gold-off; Arthur Cohen; Oscar Cohen; E. F. Singer, K.C.M.P.; A. B. Bennett; and Mrs. H. M. Samuel.
In Winnipeg, the Anti-Defamation Committee is composed of the Executive of the Canadian Jewish Congress and past presidents of the B’nai B’rith, under the chairmanship of M. J. Finklestein.
