The Canadian Ambassador in Cairo is investigating charges that Egypt is persecuting Jews, Lester B. Pearson. Minister for External Affairs, informed the House of Commons late yesterday. The Ambassador is acting on instructions from Ottawa, Mr. Pearson noted.
He made his statement in reply to a question by Leon D. Crestohl of Montreal, the only Jewish member of the House. Mr. Crestohl suggested that the Canadian Government protest Egyptian persecution before it reached Nazi-like proportions.
Meanwhile, Mr. Pearson told the House today that extension of the task of the United Nations emergency Force to cover the border area between Israel and Syria was “under consideration.” He said such an extension of function might interfere with the primary mission of UNEF keeping the peace between Egypt and Israel.
