The local office of the Jewish Colonization Association (Ica) confirms the report that the Canadian Government is refusing to admit further Jewish refugees despite the agreement in which it entered with the Ica to permit the entry of 5,000 Jewish refugees.
The cable received by the Ica here from the Ica Paris office does not indicate the reasons for the action of the Government, nor does it give any details.
The agreement which was concluded between the Canadian Government and the Ica provided for the admittance of 5,000 refugees on condition that these refugees would in no way become a burden to the Canadian Government. Only 3,000 have been admitted up to the present. The agreement referred especially to the Jewish refugees who were in Roumania waiting for admittance to the United States and debarred from entering because of the new immigration law. The Roumanian Government repeatedly postponed the expulsion of the refugees, in view of the promise made by the Canadian Government to admit them.
