The Canadian National Committee on Refugees today launched a campaign to obtain 500,000 signatures of Canadian citizens on a petition asking the Government to admit refugees. The Committee hopes to prove to the Government that there is popular support for the admission of refugees to Canada. Evidence of such support has been given to the chairman of the Committee, Senator Cairine R. Wilson, in resolutions of national organizations such as the Trades and Labor Congress, the Canadian Congress of Labor, the National Council of Women and organized church bodies.
The petition, which will be circulated for the next six weeks, urges the Canadian Government to offer the sanctuary of Canada to refugees from political or religious persecution without regard to race, creed or financial condition; to take immediate steps to facilitate the entry into Canada of refugees (especially those stranded in Portugal) whom it is still possible to rescue; to make any changes in the Immigration Act, Regulations or administration thereof necessary to admit such refugees into Canada.
