The Canadian Government has agreed to double the quota of DP’s to be admitted to the Dominion as immigrants, it was announced here by Minister of Resources James A. Glen.
His statement on the subject pointed out that 20,000 would be permitted to enter rather than the 10,000 previously announced. However, Glen pointed out, the total will be deducted from any number of DP’s Canada later agrees to accept under any international agreement. It was also disclosed that a Canadian team of experts choosing DP immigrants in Europe has thus far approved over 6,000 applications and some 2,000 men and women have already arrived in the country.
A group of 25 Jewish war orphans have arrived in Halifax and are en route to Montreal. The children, from French, Belgian and Czechoslovak child centers, are the second contingent of more than 1,000 Jewish orphans who will eventually be admitted to the Dominion, under the sponsorship of the Canadian Jewish Congress and cooperating groups.
