General Georges P. Vanier, Governor-General of Canada, today received the Proclamation of Faith and Thanksgiving issued by the Canadian Jewish Congress to mark the 200th year of continuous settlement of Jewry in Canada since Aaron Hart, the first Jew, settled in Three Rivers, in 1759.
The Proclamation, beautifully illuminated on parchment, in four languages, English French, Yiddish and Hebrew was presented to the Governor-General at Government House here. Samuel Bronfman, the president of the Canadian Jewish Congress, Lavy M. Becker, chairman of the National Bicentenary of Canadian Jewry, and Saul Hayes, the national director of the Canadian Jewish Congress, were accompanied by a small group of Congress officials. This event will be followed by a period of commemorative functions in all of the ten Provinces, marking the National Bicentenary of Canadian Jewry.
