The Canadian Government has decided to send an official trade mission to Israel early next year to establish closer commercial relations between the two countries and to explore investment opportunities in Israel, it was announced here today by George Hees, Minister of Trade and Commerce.
At a meeting today with Israel Ambassador Yaacov Herzog, it was decided that the two countries should exchange trade missions, the one from Israel scheduled to visit Canada later this year. Mr. Hees said the decision to establish closer trade relations with Israel was enhanced by the visit here last May of Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, who was accompanied by Israeli Minister of Commerce and Industry Pinhas Sapir. He said the possibility of appointing a Canadian trade commissioner in Israel, was being studied.
An Israel Embassy spokesman expressed appreciation of the fact that the official Canadian commission would interest itself in the possibilities for Canadian investment in Israel. Within the past four months, Canadian private investments in Israel have totaled $5, 000, 000. Projects for a further $5, 000,000 in investments are under consideration by Israeli investment authorities.
