Irving Layton of this city has been awarded the Governor General’s Medal as the outstanding poet of Canada. He is the third Canadian Jewish writer, following A.M. Klein and Adele Wiseman, to win the highest award open to a Canadian writer.
Mr. Layton, born Lazarowitch, is the author of a half score of small volumes of poetry issued over the past fifteen years. His collection “A Red Carpet for the Sun” has Just been issued in Toronto. He is a teacher in the Herzliah High School, the secondary school division of the United Talmud Torahs of Montreal and has written considerably in prose and in poetry on Jewish themes.
