An appeal to the Soviet Government to restore to Russian Jewry their “full rights as an ethnic and religious group” was made here last night in a resolution adopted at the closing session of the convention of the Canadian Jewish Congress. The resolution proclaimed the “deepest anguish” of the Canadian Jewry at the plight and isolation of the Russian Jewish community.
A number of resolutions were unanimously adopted expressing the interest of the CJC in Jewish education, and including proposals to encourage the establishment of Chairs for Jewish Studies at larger universities in Canada.
Other resolutions advocated that the CJC continue its efforts in the field of immigration, public relations, its ties with the World Jewish Congress, fund-raising and pay special attention to the establishment of central and local committees on Jewish youth.
There was also passed a strong resolution commending the Governments of those Canadian provinces which have either introduced or improved anti-discrimination legislation and have accompanied it “with adequate educational and enforcement provisions,” and recommending that the CJC continue its efforts to obtain similar legislation in the remaining provinces.
