Sidney D. Pierce, the only Jew in Canada’s top diplomatic service, will soon be named Canadian Ambassador to Brazil, it was learned here today.
The son of the late Asher Pierce, founder of Gan Hayim in Israel, Mr. Pierce is a former newspaperman who joined the Department of Munitions and Supply in 1940, spending four years in its Washington office where he became director-general. After joining th the External Affairs Department in 1944, he served in a number of capacities, and in 1947 was appointed Canadian Ambassador to Mexico.
In July 1950, he was given leave of absence from the External Affairs Department after the outbreak of war in Korea to become associate deputy minister of Trade and Commerce. A year or so later he returned to the External Affairs Department and was named Canadian Minister to Washington.
