Senator David Croll, of Toronto, the only Jewish Senator in Canadian history, urged Jews today to participate more in Canadian federal politics, Speaking at the first Conference here of the Canadian Council of Reform Congregations, Senator Croll said “We have isolated ourselves as a religious group.”
Rabbi Bernard Baskin of Hamilton, criticized Israel’s Minister for Religious Affairs, Zorah Warhaftig, for labeling Reform Jewry a sect instead of recognizing it as part of the main stream of Judaism. “Warhaftig’s attitude, ” he declared, “is calculated to engender tension and hostility among Jews. “
Temple Emanuel, the oldest Reform congregation in Canada, observed here its 30th anniversary and the 35 years in the rabbinate of its spiritual leader, Rabbi Harry J. Stern. Participants at the service of rededication included Supreme Court Justice Douglas C. Abbott, the principal speaker; Rabbi Albert Minda, president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis; and Dr. Stanley B. Frost, dean of the Divinity Faculty at McGill University.
