Canadian Jews, and non-Jews as well, are now paying tribute to A. J. Freiman, president of the Zionist Organization of Canada and leading Jew of the Dominion, who yesterday celebrated his fiftieth birthday. In a letter to the “Canadian Jewish Chronicle,” the Hon. R. B. Bennett, leader of the Opposition in the Federal Parliament, says of Mr. Freiman:
“In the Far West of Canada, as well as in the East, he is know for his devotion to the cause of his people and his broadminded, generous philanthropies, which are not restricted by race or religion.”
Mr. Freiman, who owns the leading department store of Ottawa, was first elected to the Canadian Zionist Exeecutive in 1901 at the Second Convention. After the death of Clarence I. de Sola, he assumed the leadership of the Canadian Zionists and with the aid of Mrs. Freiman, who is president of the Canadian Hadassah, brought the message of Zionism to 400 cities and towns in Canada. Mr. Freiman recently in a speech declared that “there are no non-Zionists in Canada, though there may be non-givers or little givers.”
