Thousands of persons last night jammed a meeting here called by the Labor Zionists to hail the establishment of a Jewish state, as ##ebrations continued in Jewish communities throughout the Dominion. Last night’s meeting adopted resolutions greeting the Palestine Jewish community and the Jewish ##cy and voicing thanks to the Canadian Government and the United Nations.Samuel Bronfman, national president of the Canadian Jewish Congress, today issued the following statement voicing the sentiments of Canadian Jewry: “The decision of the United Nations to sponsor a Jewish state in Palestine comes as great ralief to all who concern themselves with the problem of Jewish homelessness and is of tremendous significance to millions of people of all races and nations. It is a great step towards realization of the age-old dream of the Jewish people.”
Samuel J. Zacks, president of the Zionist Organization of Canada, speaking for the Dominion’s Zionists, stated: “The United Zionist Council of Canada welcomes we decision of the United Nations on Palestine with profound satisfaction. This is a jubilant day for Jewry.” Mr. Zacks, as well as Mr. Bronfman, warmly praised Minister for External Affairs Lester Pearson, and the other members of the Canadian delegation at the U.N. for their role in achieving partition.
