“The Canadian Jewish Congress and the United Zionist Council of Canada are profoundly distressed at the bloodshed and heightened tensions now being generated among Arab states on Israel’s borders, ” declared Samuel Bronfman, president of Congress, and Edward E. Gelber, president of the Council, in a joint statement issued today.
“Canada, ” said the statement, “has an opportunity and a duty to remind both the Arab States and the Great Powers of their obligations to implement the peace recommendations of the Security Council made as early as 1948-49 when Canada played a leading role in the search for an Arab-Israel settlement. The pending Security Council hearings on border violence between Israel and Jordan will afford the world ample evidence of the continued urging on the part of Israel for peace in the Middle East, and the determined effort of Arab states to prevent any lasting peace coming to the troubled Near East–indeed, of preventing even the discussion of the possible terms of such a peace.”
