David Lewis, deputy leader of the New Democratic Party, warned here against ignoring the organized spread of hate propaganda, and made a strong plea for legislation to curb it. Mr. Lewis issued the warning as one of four members of a panel organized by the Jewish Labor Committee of Canada, to discuss a report filed earlier this year of a special committee headed by Dean Maxwell Cohen, of McGill University, which urged legislation against race hatred.
The three other members of the panel, also in favor of such legislation, were Vincent Price, an editorial writer for the French newspaper Le Devoir; Gordon Fairweather, Progressive Conservative member of Parliament; and Gerard Rancourt, secretary-general of the Quebec Federation of Labor. Mr. Rancourt criticized the provincial government of Quebec for what he called its “inaction” against discrimination. Both Mr. Price and Mr. Fairweather supported the Cohen report as an effective measure against hate propaganda.
