Premier Thomas C. Douglas of the government of Saskatchewan, and Isidore C. Nollet, Minister of Agriculture, today severely criticized Foreign Minister Ernest Bevin and the British Labor Party for its Palestine policy. Both spoke at the annual conference of the Histadruth of Western Canada.
After welcoming the 120 delegates attending the conference, Premier Douglas, touching on the Bevin attitude towards the Jewish demands on Palestine, said; “The very minimum we could expect was the implementation of the Anglo-American Inquiry Commission report on Palestine. You cannot ask a committee to be set up and then ignore its report. Much as I admire the British Labor Party, I do not hesitate to say that it has forgotten promises of the past, and is compromising its pledges for the sake of friendship of the Arab world.”
Minister Nollet told the conference that he “bitterly condemns” the Bevin policy in Palestine. “It can by no stretch of the imagination be associated with a democratic people’s government,” he said, adding that he intends to make a more direct protest.
The delegates decided to raise the quota for the coming year’s Histadruth campaign from $75,000 to $100,000, including $15,000 for the development of the Smithville Ontario, training farm for chalutzim.
