Canada’s first conference of Catholics and Jews was told today that this was the time to increase Jewish-Christian dialogue, not to reduce it because of disappointment with the failure of the church to react to the threat to Israel’s existence last May and June. Addressing a Judeo-Christian Institute at Loyola University here, Joseph L. Lichten, director of intercultural affairs of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, noted that ‘Christian-Jewish encounters are the channel to true understanding.” He said they “cannot be jeopardized because of one’s specific issue, however grave.” The issue itself–in this case, Israel and the world Jewish response to it–he said, must be included in the dialogue.
The institute was co-sponsored by Loyola and the B’nai B’rith ADL office here. About 250 clergy and laymen attended its sessions.
