All candidates of all parties to run nominees in the next general elections, next month, were requested by the Canadian Jewish Congress central region today to support legislation against incitement to hatred and violence against racial and religious groups.
In a letter to all candidates in this province, Ontario, Meyer W. Gasner, chairman of the central region, pointed out that the Canadian Government had already drafted such legislation and that the issue would be before the national Parliament now if an election had not intervened.
“For the past two years,” the appeal noted, “small groups of hatemongers and neo-Nazis have been making use of the printed and spoken word to set group against group, and have been preaching an alien doctrine of race hatred, a doctrine which, if carried to its logical conclusion, can undermine our free institutions and traditions.”
“We would, of course, appreciate your taking a positive position on this issue and making it known publicly. Such action on your part would be a significant contribution toward achieving these much-needed laws,” the appeal stressed.
