A proposal for the creation of a semi-independent canton in Galilee composed of the 150,000 Arabs living in that area, was put forward yesterday by Bishop George Hakim, leader of the Greek Catholic community in Israel. The Bishop insisted that the establishment of such a semi-autonomous district would enable the Arabs to develop their traditions freely.
(In Rome, the Vatican yesterday reiterated its plea for internationalizing the city of Jerusalem and its surrounding area. The Vatican’s views were expressed by its newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, which pointed out that the Vatican, since May, 1948, had insisted that Jerusalem should be under an international regime. The armistice line, said L’Osservatore, was dictated by force and not by reason.)
