A request for a non-importation act and an appeal to the community not to patronize mushroom synagogues during the High Holidays are contained in a resolution adopted by the Chazonim Verband in Philadelphia and vicinity.
It is pointed out in a statement that this action is taken with the knowledge and consent of Orthodox rabbis of this city, whose dean is Rabbi B. L. Levinthal, and is a measure of protection for local cantors as well as for the permanently established orthodox synagogues.
It is declared that the flood into this city of cantors and pseudo-cantors, coupled with the efforts of promoters for private gain, is undermining Chazanuth as a permanent profession and is doing incalculable harm to struggling synagogues. There are a large number of cantors in this city, the appeal states, who are in every way fully qualified and there is every reason why these should be given preference.
