Cardinal Barlassina, representative of the Vatican in Jerusalem, conferred with Cardinal Gasparri, State Secretary of the Vatican, today on the situation in Palestine. Cardinal Barlassina is reported to have expressed the view that the situation in Palestine is growing worse from a Catholic standpoint because of the Zionist activities.

A secret consistory will be held in Rome in a week or two to discuss the situation in Palestine, particularly with reference to the growth of the Jewish settlement. Certain circles in the Vatican seem to be much concerned over the situation. It is also stated that Mussolini’s government is cooperating with the Vatican in this regard.

The Quirinal and the Vatican are united for the purpose of strengthening the position of Italy in the Mid East, particularly in Palestine, it being the impression of Mussolini that Italy, a Catholic power, should succeed France in its protectorate over the Christian Holy Sites in Palestine.
