Richard Cardinal Cushing of Boston said last night that he would do his best to “right the wrong of centuries against the Jews by Christians.” In a message from the Cardinal read at the four-state convention of the B’nai B’rith here, Cardinal Cushing said he would work toward approval by the forthcoming session of the Ecumenical Council of the schema on the Jews repudiating the charge of deicide.
Cardinal Cushing, who did not appear at the convention because he is recovering from major surgery, was given the B’nai B’rith Presidential Interfaith Award for “leadership and dedication in furthering the cause of a true ecumenical spirit for all the people. ” In his message to the convention, Cardinal Cushing said: “We are friends because we are children of the self-same God. We have much to say to one another, but this cannot be said by sociologists. It must be said by theologians.”

Unterkoefler, addressing a convention of District 7 of B’nai B’rith yesterday, said that Catholics and Jews are “like brothers” and need an understanding of “each other’s problems.” He said that better Jewish-Catholic relations could come about through “a greater sense of compassion, empathy and true brotherly love.” He recommended antireligious dialogues, conferences and educational forms to develop a common understanding of Jewish-Catholic problems.)
