The care of infants in immigrant reception camps in Israel has become more difficult as a result of the conversion of one-third of the reception centers into labor camps and the closing down of Jewish Agency institutions in the camps, it was reported here today.
The Women’s International Zionist Organization (WIZO) has been asked by the Israel Ministry of Social Welfare to expand its child-care programs in the immigrant camps immediately. In compliance with the request the WIZO has already reopened three previously closed-down welfare institutions in the Jerusalem and Nathania areas, as well as several kindergartens. Special courses designed to instruct immigrant mothers in the care of infants will also be instituted by the WIZO.
Dr. Leon Gellman, world Mizrachi leader, was en route today by plane for Paris, London and New York to “enlighten Jewish communities, especially in the United States, on the present situation in Israel as well as to strengthen the Mizrachi movement abroad.”
