— Gov. Hugh Carey proclaimed “80 days of Education,” coinciding with the start of the 80th year of Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe. A similar resolution was approved in the State Assembly, sponsored by Assembly Majority Leader Stanley Fink, along with Assembly members Howard Lasher and Helene Weinstein. The resolution was sponsored in the State Senate by Sen. John Marchi.
The period of the proclamation runs from April 15, corresponding to Nissan II, 5741, the Rebbe’s 79th birthday, through July 4, the first day of his 80th year. More than 75 members of the Assembly and the Senate attended a special reception in the Legislative office building to mark the announcement of the proclamation. Rabbi David Raskin, chairman of the Lubavitch Youth organization, and Rabbi Shmuel Butman, LYO director, accepted the resolution.
Butman said that on July 4, 80 Lubavitch Miztvah-Mobiles will be in operation throughout New York.
