The highest order of the Prussian state was today bestowed upon Dr. Carl Melchior, noted Hamburg banker, partner of Max Warburg, and world famous economist, for the services he rendered to the German Republic as the German representative on the directorate of the Bank for International Settlement. The Mayor of Hamburg, M. Ross, lauded Mr. Melchior’s work for the upbuilding of postwar Germany, saying that: “Melchior convinced the victorious powers of Germany’s inability to carry the burden of debt imposed upon her by the Versailles Treaty.”
Dr. Melchior, who has represented his country at every one of the post-war international conferences, recently declined the position as head of the Reichsbank after the resignation of M. Schacht. In order to accept his position on the directorate of the Bank for International Settlement, he resigned from the finance commission of the League of Nations.
