Victor M. Carter, Los Angeles civic leader, philanthropist and businessman, who has been given an honor award by Israel, was yesterday elected president of the American Friends of the Tel Aviv University. The election of Carter, who has been active in behalf of Tel Aviv University and other educational institutions for many years, took place at a meeting here of the Board of Directors of the American Friends. Tel Aviv University, with a faculty of more than 2,200 and a student body of some 14,000, including more than 1,200 from the United States, was founded in 1956.
Carter has received the Shield of David Award of the State of Israel in recognition of his outstanding leadership in a wide variety of causes relating to that country. He was chairman of the Israel Bond drive for Los Angeles for four years, and is chairman of the Israel Development Corporation, one of the country’s largest investment companies. He is a member of the Board of Governors of Tel Aviv University and the Hebrew University, and is active in support of Technion. Carter has served as general chairman of the Los Angeles United Jewish Welfare Fund and is a Fellow of Brandeis University. He is also a board member of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
