Former President Jimmy Carter, visiting Gaza today, appeared in agreement with the former Mayor of Gaza, Rashad A-Shawa, that Israeli restraint is needed if the Middle East peace process is to be advanced. A-Shawa, who was deposed by the Israeli authorities recently, received Carter at his residence. He told reporters later that he had expressed to the former President his view that King Hussein of Jordan would not join the peace process as long as Israel persisted in its drive to establish more Jewish settlements on the West Bank.
Carter reportedly told his host that the incumbent American President could hardly exert pressure on Israel because of the internal political situation in the U.S. Congress.
