Magistrate Benjamin Greenspan will hear the case of Rabbi Nathan Salant, organizer of the East Side Free Kitchen, 40 Gouverneur street, who is charged with soliciting funds under false pretenses, in an informal conference on December 11 at which all interested parties will be represented.
Assistant District Attorney John J. Sullivan, who was called in to investigate the Free Kitchen; Joseph Hartman, chief complainant, and the defendant agreed to a round table discussion.
Before Judge Greenspan decided to take the case out of court, Hartman’s attorney, Clarence Fried, testified that $8,000 had been collected by Rabbi Salant. Despite this, Fried charged, neither debts nor salaries of the institution were paid.
He also charged that his client, Hartman, gave the institution $3,000 on the representation that the board of directors of the East Side Free Kitchen included such prominent personalities as Congressman Samuel Dickstein and former Police Commissioner Grover A. Whalen.
