Bequests of about $18,000 each were made in the will of the late Charles M. Henderson, a Catholic, to the Roman Catholic Church, the Salvation Army and the Holy Blossom Synagogue of this city.
These bequests, it was stated, probably will be subjected to a legal decision. A statement issued by the National Trust Co., which is applying for letters probate of the will, declared: “There is some doubt as to whether the widow will receive the residue outright or a life interest only, as under a second residuary clause the residue is bequeathed as follows: One-third to the Bishop of the Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church, Toronto; one-third to the rabbi of Bond Street Synagogue (Holy Blossom), Toronto; one-third to the Salvation Army, Toronto, to be used for religious purposes in each case.”
“It is a great surprise to me and one which we will particularly appreciate, not because of the amount but from the knowledge that others show such confidence in us,” said Rabbi Ferdinand Isserman of the congregation, commenting on the gift. “It is very interesting to think that he would show such sympathy for our work. Until we know the terms of the will we cannot say how it will be used.”
Mr. Henderson, although of Presbyterian family, died in the Catholic faith.
