Cardinal Griffin’s instructions to British Catholics not to participate in the work of the Council of Christians and Jews has nothing to do with Catholic-Jewish relations, a spokesman for the Cardinal indicated today.
He explained that by “danger of indifferentism” – the reason given for the Cardinal’s action – was meant “the attitude that one religion is as good as another.” However, he added that such a “danger” did not arise between Catholics and Jews, but “rather possibly with some other people.”
A representative of the Council of Christians and Jews said today that Cardinal Griffin’s resignation as one of the co-presidents of the group was “under consideration.” He refused to elaborate.
