The Archbishop of Westminster told a meeting of the Council of Christians and Jews that the Roman Catholic community in Britain was rejoining the Council, from which it withdrew in 1954, on instructions from the Vatican.
The Catholic prelate said he had been informed that a proposal had been made to create an International Council of Christians and Jews. At meetings for that purpose, he said, he understood that “views were expressed which were incompatible with Catholic principles.” The Vatican, he added, has been “dismayed” by these views.
