More than 3,000 Brazilians, many of them non-Jews, attended special Israel Independence Day ceremonies here yesterday, cheering a message to Israel by President Janio Quadros, and applauding addresses by Foreign Minister Alfonso Arinos and Israel Ambassador Yosef Tekoah. The meeting had been arranged by United Zionist Organization of Brazil. Carlos Lacerda, governor of the State of Guanabara, the province embracing this city, presided.
In his special message, President Quadros said Israel is the “defender of legitimate democratic principles” in the Middle East. The President expressed the hope that Israel “would continue to remain the bastion of democracy in the Middle East, alongside the other free countries in the Orient.”
