Barnett Janner, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, yesterday rejected a suggestion that the Board send a delegation to the Soviet Union to ascertain the situation of Russian Jewry.
Noting that there was no official Jewish community in the Soviet Union with whom such a Jewish delegation could make contact, he said such a delegation would be of no help and the results of such a visit would adversely affect Russian Jews. At this time, he added, such a delegation would be inadvisable.
The Board also discussed a proposal to convene a world conference on Jewish education at the end of 1959 or early in 1960. Mr. Janner said the British Jewry could not remain aloof from this proposal and that the Board was prepared to submit a draft agenda for such a conference.
