A chaplaincy procurement plan which includes some elements of selective service procedure will be considered at an extraordinary session of the Central Conference of American Rabbis in Cleveland on November 13, it was announced by Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein of Rochester, president of the rabbinical association. The emergency meeting will be held during the biennial convention of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations in that city.
The plan, which will be proposed to the Central Conference for voluntary acceptance, will, if adopted, affect all members of the Central Conference and all graduates of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion who do not belong to other national rabbinical groups. If this program is adopted, it will be the first time the Central Conference has ever put into force a selective service program for the procurement of chaplains.
