Grave charges against the Central Verein, the Central Union of German Jews, in connection with the arrest of Dr. Marx, representative of the organization, in Frankfurt, are disclosed today in the Frankfurter Zeitung for the first time, although Dr. Marx has been under arrest for about two weeks. Allegedly, Dr. Marx bribed a Frankfurt police officer and former member of the police presidium, named Moehrdel, who also has been arrested for combatting the Nazi movement, and illegally secured copies and photographs of official acts and helped cover up the tracks of other officials who helped the work of the organization.
The charges against Herr Steinberg, former police president and prominent Frankfurt Jewish leader, who was released yesterday after two weeks’ imprisonment on charges of “passive bribery”, have not been dropped, it was learned today, despite his release. Investigation of the case is expected to be concluded within a few days.
The Nazi commissar in Baden has issued a decree that Jews in public markets must not converse in Yiddish or Hebrew. His ruling applies to other public places as well. The Mayor of Kottbus has gone even further in ordering Jewish vendors not to appear in the market on market days and has also decreed that the licenses of Jewish peddlers should not be renewed.
A new decree published today prohibits people in Germany who bear citizenship in no country from accepting employment without first obtaining a special permit. Only “staatenlose” residing in Germany for more than ten years will be exempted from the provisions of this decree.
Thanks to the intervention of the Danish Government, German Jews will be able to continue the importation of kosher meat from Denmark. In accordance with the Danish-German trade agreement, importation of meat from Denmark is allowed on the basis of the treaty. When the Nazis endeavored to prohibit the importing of kosher meat, the Danish Government intervened, pointing to the provisions of the treaty. Thus the Jewish restaurants have now reopened and the Jewish population is being supplied with imported kosher meat.
