Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain has replied to President Roosevelt’s message on refugees, it was learned today. While official circles declined to reveal the reply’s contents, they said that “the points raised by President Roosevelt’s message are still under active consideration.”
The President’s message was described in interested circles here as having a salutary effect in arousing an awareness of the fact that no general appeasement is possible unless the refugee question is regulated and settled.
Approaches will soon be made in Berlin through various diplomatic channels about receiving George Rublee, director of the Intergovernmental refugee Bureau, for negotiations on emigration with capital, it was learned authoritatively. It is understood that ambassadors of several powers will raise the question separately, but there is no question of a concerted demarche. It was learned, however, that no instructions to this end have been sent yet by the British Foreign Office to Ambassador Nevile Henderson.
