Some reassurance to the Jewish Community of Germany, threatened with the deprivation of their equality rights by Adolph Hitler and his Nazis, was offered last night by Chancellor Franz von Papen in his radio address, on government program in which he affirmed the readiness of the government to use force if necessary, to assure the protection of the equality rights of all citizens.
“Equality before the law for every German citizen I shall safeguard, if necessary by using force. I am determined to quench the smouldering fires of civil war, to end the political disorders and acts of violence which so greatly impede the constructive work that is the real task of the government,” Chancellor von Papen said.
Challenging Hitler’s claim to consider the minority which follows him as the whole German nation, Chancellor von Papen asserted: “The unrestraint exhibited in the manifesto of the National Socialist leader comports ill with his claims to leadership in the government. I do not concede to him the right to regard that minority which troops behind his banner as ‘the German nation’ or the right to treat all the rest as outlaws.”
