Charges of anti-Jewish discrimination by the Sydney Grammar School, one of the oldest Australian institutions of higher learning, were denied here after the Jewish community had been considerably stirred by a report that the school, founded on a strictly non-sectarian basis, was discriminating against Jews.
Explanation of a report which was published under the headline “Hebrews objected to at the Sydney Grammar School.” was made by the head of the school. A misunderstanding arose out of the incident of a newly arrived Palestinian teacher, who proposed that a class be formed for modern Hebrew at the school. The headmaster replied that the curriculum was already filled and that the school regulations prevented the engagement of visiting teachers for such subjects.
The school has been attended by a great number of Jewish students, the headmaster declared.
