Existence of a Nazi secret service system operating in France, Austria, Scandinavia and Czechoslovakia was charged today by the Manchester Guardian.
The service, known as “Referat-1,” which carries out general internal espionage among German civil service departments, operates in those countries independently of the Gestapo, the State secret police, or the military intelligence bureau, the paper declares.
Headquarters of the service, the Manchester Guardian reveals, are at Leipzig.
One of its main functions, it is alleged, is to establish political contacts in order to create disaffection in time of war.
