Marcus Shloimovitz of Manchester has served a writ against the Clarendon Press, publishers of the Oxford Dictionary, seeking an injunction against their use of allegedly derogatory definitions of the word “Jew.” The definitions referred to are “a grasping or extortionate usurer,” and “a trader who drives hard bargaining and deals craftily.” The verb form of “Jew” is defined by the dictionary as “to cheat.” The Clarendon Press declined comment on grounds the matter was sub judice (before a court).
