Among the more important charges filed against the Schechter brothers are the sale of poultry unfit for human consumption, sale of uninspected poultry, and the filing of “false and fictitious” information with government authorities.
Defense Attorney Heller raised the point that the chickens could not have been unfit for human consumption, because slaughterers are on guard against such poultry. He called the case “a conspiracy to railroad my clients.”
IVES ONLY WITNESS
The only witness, Dr. Leland D. Ives, supervisor of the live poultry inspection service, was subjected to a long grilling by both Rice and Heller. He was on the stand all afternoon and is to reappear this morning, when the hearing will be continued.
Dr. Ives testified that 289,228 pounds of poultry was condemned and destroyed during 1933. He also declared that many poultry diseases are contagious. A significant point in his testimony was his assertion that poultry is inspected only on request of the buyer.
Under cross-examination. Dr. Ives admitted that each inspector daily examines about 16,000 chickens. Of this total only a few are actually handled by the inspectors, he said, while the other chickens are scrutinized for disease symptoms.
