A charity ball organized by Jewish students in Oradeamari, Transylvania, for the purpose of raising 50,000 lei for a Jewish hospital in that town, has been called off owing to the protests of the town Rabbi.
Rabbi Benjamin Fuchs strenuously denounced the Arrangements Committee of the ball from his pulpit last Saturday, declaring that Jewish girls would dance in indecent dresses, and that money raised through such methods would taint the hospital. Because of this expression of the Rabbi’s opinion, the plan for the ball was abandoned.
The local Roumanian paper, “Gyilkos,” attacked the Rabbi editorially, charging that on account of his interference the sick people of the town have been deprived of the necessary hospital facilities. The local orthodox Jews, however, have held a meeting at which they declared their adherence to the Rabbi.
