Bernard Jaffe, a teacher of chemistry in the Girls’ Commercial High School in Brooklyn, has been awarded a gold medal and prize of $7,500 for the best book submitted in a contest for the humanizing of knowledge which was sponsored by the “Forum” magazine in cooperation with the publishing house of Simon and Schuster. Mr. Jaffe’s book is entitled “Crucibles” and recounts the development of modern chemistry. The award was presented to Mr. Jaffe by Professor John Dewey on Friday in the office of the “Forum.” During the presentation ceremony President Harvey N. Davis of the Stevens Institute of Technology spoke.
Mr. Jaffe, who is 34 years, was graduated in 1916 from the City College of New York. Portions of his book will be published in the “Forum.” He plans to use his money for a year or two of travel in Europe for the purpose of studying the chemical laboratories there.
