A report on their findings of the positions of Jews in need overseas was presented here today to 175 top Jewish community leaders of this city by members of ran Overseas Study Mission to Europe and North Africa sent by the Combined Jewish Appeal of Metropolitan Chicago under the leadership of David Silbert, CJA president.
“The French Jewish community is faced with formidable problems which it cannot meet by itself, ” Mr. Silbert reported. “The Jews of Morocco and other countries of North Africa, and particularly the remnant of aged and sick Jews remaining in Algeria, are living on the edge of starvation and in fear for their very lives. This is indeed the zero hour, and time is swiftly running out for us if we seek to rescue our Jewish brothers. Israel remains the hope of many of the Jews we talked with and ate with, in Paris, Marseilles and Casablanca. Many will stay in France or seek a new life in other countries, including our own, here in the U.S.A.”
Other mission members who reported with Mr. Silbert were Max Robert Schrayer, chairman of the 1963 CJA division of trades, industries and professions; Harry X. Cole and Alfred P. Lasker, co-chairman of that division; Alexander Annes, associate chairman; Mrs. Samuel E. Hokin, a member of the Jewish Welfare Fund’s board of directors; and Albert A. Hutler, CJA campaign director.
