January 6, 1943, will be observed as Haym Salomon day by the City of Chicago in honor of the services of the great Jewish patriot of the American Revolution, according to a resolution unanimously adopted by the City Council.
Upon proclamation of Mayor Edward J. Kelley, Haym Salomon day will be devoted to “retelling, in our schools and before public assemblies, the story of the contribution of our Founding Fathers to the building of America, to intensifying the campaign for the sale of Victory bonds and to rededicating our lives to the cause of liberty for which Haym Salomon sacrificed all he had.” According to the resolution introduced by Alderman Frances E. Callahan, “Haym Salomon risked his life and sacrificed his fortune in behalf of the American cause and, together with George Washington and Robert Morris, conducted this nation’s first victory bond drive.”
