More than one hundred orthodox Jewish congregations of Chicago observed the last day of Passover by giving over their pulpits to speakers for the $500,000 fund being raised here for the United Palestine Appeal.
Judge Hugo Pam, Max Shulman and Harry M. Fisher, officials of the United Palestine Appeal, spoke in three of the largest synagogues and appealed for contributions by the worshippers.
The bulk of Chicago’s quota will be raised from small contributions, Mr. Shulman, chairman of the Chicago drive, declared.
Samuel Ginsburg, head of the Union of Orthodox Congregations, which arranged the synagogue appeal, predicted that the Passover effort would yield in excess of $100,000.
Reform rabbis supplemented the appeal by endorsing the drive from their pulpits. Dr. Abram Hirschberg urged a sinking of all differences in the work of providing European refugees with a chance for happiness on the soil of Palestine. America is no longer the land of promise to them,” he said. Palestine alone is open to them.”
Chaim Nachman Bialik is expected to arrive here today. He will be met at the station by a committee composed of several hundred representatives of the Jewish community here. Mr. Bialik will, with Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, be the guests of honor at a dinner in the Ballroom of the Palmer House tonight.
