The first top-level meeting aimed at resolving the long-smoldering dispute over charges of indiscriminate performance of autopsies in Israeli hospitals was held here today when Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Isser Yehuda Unterman received a delegation representing the Israel Medical Association.
The meeting followed demonstrations on the issue in Tel Aviv yesterday that erupted into violence when bands of youths having no connection with the protest rally inflicted damage on various buildings.
At today’s meeting, the Chief Rabbi agreed to consider a memorandum to be submitted by the physicians which will explain their arguments on the necessity for post-mortem examinations and which will set forth the medical needs of autopsies as well as their assurances of respect for the deceased.
